3-day Portrait Sculpture Course
£270
Whether you are a complete beginner looking to learn something new, or you have done some sculpture previously and are looking to develop or refresh your learning, this course will provide all you need to take that next step.
Location
The courses take place at my studio in Backwell - a 20 min drive from Central Bristol. It is a large, naturally lit studio in an old farm building nestled amongst the woods.
Own transport is essential and there’s plenty of room for parking.
What will we be doing?
Working from a life model, you will be instructed in every aspect of modelling the human head in clay. Using calipers and plumb lines you will learn how to accurately set out the features, gain insight into proportion and learn basic anatomical knowledge of the human head and face.
After a brief introduction to the equipment and tools you will be using, work will begin on applying clay to the bust peg, setting out the profile and mapping out the proportions.
This is arguably the most important stage, if anything ends up in the wrong place it will prove very difficult to achieve a likeness. We then work on profiles, front, back, sides, and 3-quarter view, turning the model incrementally so every student has the same time on each view. You will learn how to cross check points on the face against each other, a crucial technique in establishing correct placement, proportion and likeness.
"Richard's three day course was not just a lesson in sculpting, but also a fascinating study in observation and attention to detail. His teaching was clear, enthusiastic, endlessly patient and always encouraging. The home-cooked food was delicious and in plentiful supply. There was a lovely positive and relaxed atmosphere in the studio from Richard, Torrin our model, and all the students. Overall it was excellent value for money and I can’t wait to do some more.”
